Overview
Turborepo is a high-performance build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos, written in Rust and maintained by Vercel. It optimizes the execution of tasks like building, testing, and linting across multiple packages in a repository by using content-aware hashing, intelligent task scheduling, and both local and remote caching.
When you run a build in a monorepo, Turborepo analyzes the dependency graph between packages, determines which tasks can run in parallel, and skips tasks whose inputs haven’t changed since the last run. This content-aware caching means that rebuilding after a small change takes seconds instead of minutes, even in repositories with hundreds of packages.
How It Works
Agents configure Turborepo via a turbo.json file at the repository root that declares task pipelines and their dependency relationships. Running turbo run build executes the build task across all packages in the correct topological order, parallelizing independent tasks and caching outputs. The turbo CLI (installed via npm install turbo) integrates with npm, yarn, pnpm, and bun workspaces.
Turborepo’s remote caching feature, available through Vercel or self-hosted solutions, allows teams to share build caches across CI/CD and developer machines. When one developer builds a package, another developer or CI run with the same inputs can download the cached output instead of rebuilding, dramatically reducing build times in teams.
Key Features
Turborepo provides task filtering (run tasks only in changed packages), watch mode for incremental development, dry-run mode for debugging task graphs, and detailed profiling output compatible with Chrome DevTools. It generates task execution summaries and supports environment variable passthrough for cache key computation. With over 30,000 GitHub stars and backing from Vercel, Turborepo is one of the most widely adopted monorepo build tools. Companies listed on the Turborepo showcase include major enterprises using it to manage large-scale JavaScript codebases.
