MLT Multimedia Framework for Video Editing and Processing
MLT is an open-source LGPL multimedia framework designed for video editing. It provides a toolkit and the melt command-line tool for non-linear video editing, transitions, effects, and rendering. MLT powers Shotcut, Kdenlive, and other video editors.

MLT (Media Lovin Toolkit) is an open-source multimedia framework specifically designed for non-linear video editing. Maintained by the MLT Framework organization, it provides a C API and a command-line tool called melt for composing, editing, and rendering video and audio content.
What this skill actually does
Architecture
MLT uses a producer-filter-consumer pipeline model. Producers load media files, filters apply effects and transformations, transitions blend between clips, and consumers render the output to a file or display. This modular design allows complex editing workflows to be assembled programmatically or through the melt command line.
The melt CLI
The melt command-line tool is the primary interface for scripted video processing. It can load video and audio files, apply filters (color correction, scaling, fades, text overlay, chroma key), compose multi-track timelines, apply transitions between clips, and render the result to various output formats. For example: melt clip1.mp4 -mix 25 -mixer luma clip2.mp4 -consumer avformat:output.mp4 creates a 25-frame luma wipe transition between two clips.
Format Support
Through its FFmpeg/libav integration, MLT supports virtually every audio and video format. It includes plugins for SDL playback, Jack audio, LADSPA audio effects, frei0r video effects, Sox audio processing, and more. The framework handles frame-accurate editing, multi-track mixing, and real-time preview.
Ecosystem
MLT is the rendering engine behind several major video editors including Shotcut (cross-platform, open-source, GPLv3, 11k GitHub stars) and Kdenlive (KDE video editor). Any project built on MLT can leverage its full filter and transition library.
Agent Integration
For AI agents, MLT and the melt CLI provide a scriptable, headless video editing pipeline. Agents can construct melt command lines to cut clips, apply effects, compose multi-track projects, and render output โ all without a GUI. The XML serialization format allows agents to generate complete project files programmatically and render them in batch.
Installation and Status
MLT is available via OS package managers: apt install melt (Debian/Ubuntu), brew install mlt (macOS), or build from source using CMake. The project has over 1,700 GitHub stars, is licensed under LGPL-2.1, and documentation is at mltframework.org.
