MinIO is an open-source, high-performance object storage server that implements the Amazon S3 API. With over 60,000 GitHub stars, it is the most popular self-hosted S3-compatible storage solution. MinIO is designed for cloud-native workloads including AI/ML data lakes, backup and archival, and serving static assets. It runs as a single binary on Linux, macOS, and Windows, and can scale from a single node to a distributed multi-petabyte cluster.
What this skill actually does
Overview
Core Capabilities
MinIO provides full compatibility with the AWS S3 API, meaning any application, tool, or SDK that works with S3 works with MinIO without modification. It supports erasure coding for data protection, bitrot detection for silent data corruption, encryption at rest and in transit, bucket versioning, object locking for WORM compliance, and lifecycle management policies. The server includes a built-in web console for bucket and user management.
Agent Integration Points
AI agents can interact with MinIO using standard S3 SDKs (aws-sdk, boto3, minio-go, minio-js) or the mc (MinIO Client) CLI tool. The mc CLI supports commands like mc ls, mc cp, mc mirror, and mc admin for managing storage programmatically. Agents can use MinIO as artifact storage for CI/CD pipelines, training data repositories for ML workflows, or as a backup target. The S3-compatible event notification system (via webhooks, Kafka, AMQP, NATS) enables agents to react to object creation and deletion events.
Key Features
- Full AWS S3 API compatibility
- Erasure coding and bitrot protection
- Server-side encryption (SSE-S3, SSE-C, SSE-KMS)
- Bucket versioning and object locking (WORM)
- Identity management with LDAP/AD, OpenID Connect, and built-in IAM
- Event notifications via webhooks, Kafka, AMQP, NATS, Redis
- Built-in web console at port 9001
- mc CLI for scriptable object and admin operations
Installation
# Binary
wget https://dl.min.io/server/minio/release/linux-amd64/minio
chmod +x minio
./minio server /data
# Docker
docker run -p 9000:9000 -p 9001:9001 minio/minio server /data --console-address ":9001"
Configuration
MinIO is configured via environment variables (MINIO_ROOT_USER, MINIO_ROOT_PASSWORD) and command-line flags. Distributed mode uses minio server http://node{1...4}/data{1...4} syntax for multi-node multi-drive deployment. The mc CLI connects to servers via aliases: mc alias set myminio http://localhost:9000 minioadmin minioadmin.
