mdBook is a Rust-based command-line tool that generates modern, navigable online books from Markdown files. Maintained under the official rust-lang GitHub organization, it is the tool behind The Rust Programming Language book and countless other technical documentation projects.
How It Works
Authors organize content into chapters using a SUMMARY.md file that defines the book structure. Each chapter is a Markdown file. Running mdbook build produces a static HTML site with full-text search, syntax-highlighted code blocks, a table of contents sidebar, theme switching (light/dark), and print-friendly output. The built-in mdbook serve command launches a local development server with automatic rebuilds on file changes.
Key Features
mdBook supports integrated search via elasticlunr.js, Rust code block testing (verifying that code samples compile), custom preprocessors for extending Markdown capabilities, alternative renderers for output formats beyond HTML, and customizable themes via Handlebars templates and CSS. It ships as a single static binary with no runtime dependencies.
Agent Integration
For AI agents, mdBook provides a clean interface for generating structured documentation. An agent can create a book skeleton with mdbook init, populate chapters by writing Markdown files, define the table of contents in SUMMARY.md, build with mdbook build, and serve locally or deploy the book/ output directory. Install via cargo install mdbook or download prebuilt binaries from the GitHub releases page. The tool is licensed under MPL-2.0.
