What is CapRover?
CapRover is an open-source, self-hosted Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that dramatically simplifies application deployment and web server management. With nearly 15,000 stars on GitHub, it is often described as a self-hosted Heroku alternative because it provides the same deployment ease at a fraction of the cost. CapRover uses Docker Swarm, Nginx, LetsEncrypt, and NetData under the hood, but hides all the complexity behind a clean web interface and CLI.
Deployment Capabilities
CapRover supports deploying applications written in NodeJS, Python, PHP, ASP.NET, Ruby, Go, and virtually any language that can run in a Docker container. It provides multiple deployment methods: upload source code from the dashboard, use the caprover CLI to deploy from the command line, or set up webhooks to build automatically on git push from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket.
One-Click Application Store
The built-in one-click app store lets you deploy databases and services from a dropdown menu. Available options include MariaDB, MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, WordPress, and dozens of other popular applications. Each one-click app comes pre-configured with sensible defaults and automatic integration with the CapRover networking and SSL infrastructure.
SSL and Networking
CapRover automatically provisions free SSL certificates via LetsEncrypt for all deployed applications. The Nginx reverse proxy handles load balancing, and the fully customizable Nginx template allows fine-tuning for specific requirements. Docker Swarm provides built-in clustering support, enabling horizontal scaling across multiple nodes.
CLI and Automation
The CapRover CLI (caprover-cli on npm) enables scriptable deployments and server management. Common operations include deploying applications, creating new apps, managing environment variables, and scaling containers. This makes it easy to integrate CapRover into CI/CD pipelines or automation scripts. The CLI can manage multiple CapRover instances from a single workstation.
No Lock-In Design
A key philosophy of CapRover is zero lock-in. If you decide to remove CapRover, your applications continue running as standard Docker containers with Nginx. There is no proprietary format or dependency that binds you to the platform. This makes it an ideal stepping stone for teams that want PaaS convenience today with the option to graduate to custom infrastructure later.
