Tools required
Node.js 18+, Socraticode CLI or MCP server, and a compatible agent client such as Claude Code, VS Code, Cursor, or another MCP-capable coding environment
Install & setup
Install the npm package with npx socraticode or add Socraticode through the documented Claude Code plugin, VS Code extension, or MCP server setup. Index the target repository, then ask the agent for semantic search, dependency-graph, symbol-impact, call-flow, or cross-project analysis.

Quick brief

Socraticode is a local codebase-intelligence workflow for agents working in large repositories. The operator installs the Socraticode CLI, Claude Code plugin, VS Code extension, or MCP server, indexes the repository, then asks the agent to answer architecture, dependency, symbol-impact, call-flow, or cross-branch search questions against that index.

How it works

What this skill actually does

Use this instead of normal product search or ad hoc grep when a coding agent needs repository-wide context without repeatedly scanning the same files or spending large token budgets on broad code reads. It is especially useful before risky refactors, bug-impact reviews, onboarding to unfamiliar systems, or tracing API/database/infrastructure relationships across a large codebase.

The scope boundary is Socraticode’s codebase-indexing and retrieval workflow. It is not a generic IDE extension listing, not a broad MCP directory entry, and not a replacement coding agent. The approved use is local/private codebase intelligence exposed to existing agent runtimes through the documented plugin, CLI, extension, or MCP surfaces.
