Quick brief

Prefect is an open-source workflow orchestration framework built specifically for Python data pipelines. Developed by PrefectHQ, it enables teams to transform any Python script into a production-ready workflow with scheduling, retries, caching, event-driven automations, and full observability โ€” all through simple Python decorators.

How it works

What this skill actually does

Decorator-Based Workflow Definition

Prefect uses Python decorators (@flow and @task) to define workflows without requiring changes to existing code logic. A flow is the top-level orchestration unit, while tasks are individual units of work within a flow. This approach means existing Python scripts can be converted to orchestrated workflows by adding just a few lines of code. Tasks automatically gain retry capabilities, logging, caching, and state tracking.

Scheduling and Deployment

Workflows can be deployed as scheduled jobs using cron expressions, interval-based schedules, or RRule definitions. The .serve() method starts a lightweight deployment process that watches for scheduled runs. For production environments, Prefect supports Docker-based work pools, Kubernetes deployments, and managed execution through Prefect Cloud. Deployments can be parameterized with runtime inputs.

Resilience and Error Handling

Prefect provides built-in resilience features including automatic retries with configurable delays, task-level caching to avoid redundant computation, timeout enforcement, and comprehensive error handling with state-based flow control. Tasks can define conditional branching based on upstream results, and failed runs can be retried from the point of failure rather than restarting from scratch.

Observability

All workflow activity is automatically tracked and visible through either the self-hosted Prefect server UI (accessible at localhost:4200) or the managed Prefect Cloud dashboard. The UI provides run history, task-level logs, flow run timelines, state transitions, and alerting capabilities. Prefect emits structured events that can trigger downstream automations.

Agent Integration

AI agents can use Prefect to orchestrate complex data processing pipelines, schedule ETL jobs, build resilient API data collection workflows, implement retry-safe web scraping, and automate ML training pipelines. The Python-native API integrates naturally with data science libraries including pandas, httpx, SQLAlchemy, and any Python package. Install with pip install prefect or uv add prefect.
