Mailspring is a cross-platform desktop email client that combines a modern TypeScript/React UI with a high-performance C++ sync engine based on Mailcore2. Originally forked from Nylas Mail and maintained by one of its original authors, Mailspring delivers a polished email experience that uses roughly half the RAM and CPU of its predecessor while supporting IMAP, Office 365, and Gmail accounts natively.
What this skill actually does
Overview
Key Features
- Unified Inbox: Aggregate all email accounts into a single view with smart sorting and filtering
- Snooze and Send Later: Schedule emails to be sent at optimal times or snooze incoming messages for follow-up
- Mail Rules: Create automated rules to organize, label, and route incoming messages
- Templates: Create and reuse email templates with variable substitution for common correspondence
- Plugin Architecture: Extensible plugin system built on React that allows building custom features and integrations
- Theme System: CSS-based theming with a theme starter kit for creating custom visual appearances
- C++ Sync Engine: High-performance Mailcore2-based sync engine that runs locally, keeping email credentials off the cloud
- Multi-account Support: Connect and manage multiple IMAP, Gmail, and Office 365 accounts simultaneously
Agent Integration
AI agents can leverage Mailspring’s plugin architecture to build custom email automation workflows. The React-based plugin system uses a well-documented API for accessing mailbox data, composing messages, and responding to email events. Agents working on email productivity can scaffold Mailspring plugins that implement custom triage rules, automated responses, and integration bridges to other tools. The local sync engine means all data processing happens on-device, making it suitable for privacy-sensitive automation.

Technical Details
Mailspring’s UI layer is built with Electron, React, and TypeScript under GPLv3. The sync engine (Mailspring-Sync) is a separate C++ binary also under GPLv3 that communicates with the UI via a local socket. The architecture supports hot-reloading of plugins during development. Available as .deb, .rpm, .snap packages for Linux, DMG for macOS, and installer for Windows. The project includes starter kits for both plugin and theme development.
