Devbox is a command-line tool from Jetify that creates reproducible, isolated development environments powered by the Nix package ecosystem. Instead of managing tools with brew, apt, or asdf, developers define their project dependencies in a single devbox.json file. Running devbox shell launches an environment with exactly those tools installed, without affecting the host system or conflicting with other projects.

How It Works

Devbox leverages the Nix package manager under the hood, providing access to over 400,000 package versions via Nixhub.io. When you run devbox add python@3.10, it records the exact package version in devbox.json and a lockfile. The devbox shell command creates an isolated shell session where only the declared packages are available. This eliminates the “works on my machine” problem by ensuring every team member and CI runner uses identical tool versions.
