Quick brief

SEOnaut is an open-source technical SEO auditing tool with over 650 GitHub stars, built with the Go programming language and licensed under MIT. It provides a web-based interface for crawling websites and generating comprehensive reports organized by issue severity โ€” critical, high, and low โ€” making it straightforward to prioritize fixes that will have the greatest impact on search visibility.

How it works

What this skill actually does

Crawling and Analysis

SEOnaut performs a full site crawl starting from a given URL, following internal links to discover all accessible pages. During the crawl, it analyzes each page for a wide range of technical SEO issues including: broken links returning 404 errors, redirect chains and loops (both temporary 302 and permanent 301), missing or duplicate title tags, missing or duplicate meta descriptions, incorrectly ordered heading tags (h1-h6), missing canonical URLs, pages blocked by robots.txt, missing hreflang attributes for multilingual sites, and image alt text coverage.

Reporting Dashboard

The web UI presents results through an interactive dashboard powered by Apache ECharts, showing issue distribution by severity, page-level detail views, and trend tracking across multiple crawls. Reports can be filtered by issue type, allowing agents to focus on specific problem categories such as indexability issues, content quality signals, or link health.

Architecture

The application uses MySQL for data storage and serves a lightweight frontend built with custom CSS and minimal vanilla JavaScript โ€” no heavy framework dependencies. This keeps the tool fast and resource-efficient, suitable for deployment on modest hardware or alongside other services.

Deployment

SEOnaut ships with Docker Compose configuration for quick deployment. The Docker setup bundles the Go application with a MySQL database, requiring only a single docker-compose up to get started. A hosted version is also available at seonaut.org for users who want to try it without self-hosting.

Agent Integration

For AI agent workflows, SEOnaut can be deployed as a self-hosted SEO analysis backend. Agents can trigger crawls via the web interface or integrate with the application’s internal API to programmatically submit sites for analysis and retrieve structured issue reports. The Go-based architecture ensures fast crawl performance even on large sites with thousands of pages, and the MySQL backend allows direct querying of crawl results for custom analysis pipelines.

Comparison with Commercial Tools

SEOnaut covers similar ground to commercial tools like Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, and Ahrefs Site Audit, but as a free, self-hosted, open-source solution it offers unlimited crawls with no page caps, full data ownership, and the ability to customize detection rules by modifying the Go source code.
